The Bryan Golden Bears visited Liberty Center tonight, and lost a close one by a score of 22-19. Coach Travis Cooper challenged his team this week, and boy did they respond. A stout defense allowed 327 yards of total offense, and the Bears put up 321 of their own. The Bears were driving to tie it late in the game, but came up just short, losing 22-19.
The Bears received the opening kick and went 28 yards on 10 plays, taking 2:44 of the clock, but ended up turning it over downs. Liberty Center then marched 65 yards on eight plays, including passes of 43 yards and 12 yards to Maes. Elling scored from two yards out with 5:03 remaining in the 1st quarter. The Bears answered with their own TD drive, covering 69 yards in eight plays, capped by a 19-yard Cody Keil TD rush. The score at the end of the first quarter was 7-6 in favor of the home team.
On the opening drive of the 2nd quarter, Liberty Center took seven plays to go 77 yards, with Sexon rushing 34 yards and Maes receiving a 31-yard touchdown pass from Brown. The Bears could not move the football and punted. One the ensuing drive, the Bears were flagged for the first of three very questionable pass interference calls. It didn’t matter, as Brown threw an interception to Shayne Combs. Two plays later, Keil hit Alex Nossman for a 55-yard touchdown. The two point conversion pass was no good. Liberty then went 57 yards on nine plays, including long passes to Jordan and Prchlik. The Bears had the Tigers stopped in the red zone, then on 4th and 4, they were flagged for pass interference. This was a horrible call; if anyone was interfered with, it was the Bryan defender. This gave the Tigers a fresh set of downs at the two, and Elling made the most of it, scoring on first down. The extra point was wide left. The Bears had an interception to finish the first half, with the score 20-12.
To start the third quarter, the Bears forced Liberty to go three-and-out. Cody Costanzo turned the jets on and romped 27 yards for a first down. Following an illegal block in the back call, the Bears punted right back. Following another LC three-and-out, the Bears threw another interception. The Tigers gave it right back to them on an interception. On the ensuing drive, the Bears were flagged for Offensive Pass Interference (another horrible call) and after that was marched off, they had a False Start penalty and ended up punting again. Liberty ended up going three-and-out again after an Illegal Block in the Back. Here’s where it got hairy. Cody Keil was being pursued by the defense, and threw the ball in the direction of Tony Nedadog, but was flagged for Intentional Grounding. This call was so bad, even the Liberty Center folks in the press box thought we got screwed. It was clearly not Intentional Grounding, as there was an eligible player in the vicinity of the ball. The Head Referee blew this call and many others all night. On the next play, Keil threw it away in his own endzone and the Tigers were awarded the safety, making it 22-12 at the end of the third quarter.
Following the free-kick, Liberty Center went 18 yards on seven plays and turned it over on downs. The Bears got it back, and marched it down the field. Keil had completions to Combs for 10 and 11 yards, then to Nossaman for 20. Then he hit Nossaman again in the end zone for a 22-yard TD score. The point was good and that would make it 22-19. Liberty tried the move the football and had a 40 yard pass to Maes. But on fourth down, the Bears batted a pass away and got the ball back on downs. The Bears moved the ball down the field, taking a little too much time. On a trick play, on 4th and 6, Combs hit Nossaman for a 40 yard strike. It was all for naught though, as the Bears could not get into field goal range and the Tigers escaped with the win.
Jim and I were proud of the way the Bears responded to the challenge of this week’s game. They played great defense, and had a good offensive game as well. It’s a shame that the officials had to insert themselves into the game with blown calls. Know that we will be sending tape of this game to the OHSAA officials office for review. We don’t believe that there was any bias, but the head referee just made several terrible calls, which may have cost the Bears the game.
With the loss, the Bears move to 3-5 on the season, while the Tigers move to 7-1 and keep their playoff hopes alive. The Bears travel next week to Swanton, while the Tigers play Archbold. Catch the replay of this game on BMU 3 starting tomorrow at 7:00 PM with replays all week. The game will be available on-demand, on this site starting Monday. The first three quarters of tonight’s Bryan-Wauseon game saw the NWOAL rivals pretty evenly matched. The fourth quarter, however, can be summed up in one word - deplorable.
The Bears traveled to Harmon Field in Wauseon looking for the upset. What they got was a beatdown.
Things started off well, as on the Indians’ first series Alex Nossaman picked off a Landon Schaffner pass for a touchdown and after a missed extra point, the Bears went up by a 6-0 score. On the next possession, Colin Hughes scored the first of his three rushing touchdowns on a three-yard run, making it 7-6. Then Tyler Deeds picked off Cody Keil for 46 yards, setting up a 34-yard Hughes TD, making it 14-6. That was the score at the end of the first quarter.
Bryan’s Alex Nossaman, who was being defended on a mismatch all night, picked up a 47-yard pass reception, but Bryan ended up turning it over on downs in the red zone. Wauseon would strike again, as Hughes picked up another TD, this time for 14 yards. Late in the second quarter, Bryan went into the two-minute drill, going 64 yards in eight plays, capped with a 21-yard Colton Ponscak TD reception, making it 21-12. Levi Fisher took the direct snap into the endzone for the two point conversion and the Bears got to within 21-14 at the half.
Wauseon got the ball to start the third quarter and each team punted, Wauson twice. Then on the next drive, the Bears lost a fumble. The Indians couldn’t capitalize and the teams traded punts again to end the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the wheels fell off as Wauseon put together a quick four-play, 55-yard drive culminating in a Reynolds 35-yard TD run. That made it 28-14. The Bears ended up punting, and Wauseon turned it over on downs. Keil then threw his fourth interception, and Colin Hughes took it to the house for a 20-yard touchdown. At this point, the score was 35-14. But the Indians were not done. After the Bears’ last ditch-effort ended on downs, Wauseon sub Nick McGill capped off a seven-play, 65 yard drive with a 12 yard TD. That’s how it would end, 42-14.
The Bears played solid football for three quarters, but once again turnovers, penalties and mental mistakes cost them a winnable game. It was certainly a disappointing trip down Route 20-A for the Bears and their fans.
For the Bears, Cody Keil was 11-16 with 145 yards passing, 3 interceptions and a TD. Nossaman grabbed 3 passes for 68 yards (and had an interception return for a TD). Ponscak had 3 catches for 51 yards and a TD. Combs caught 2 balls for 8 yards, and Fisher nabbed a 16-yard pass.
On the ground, Levi Fisher had 35 yards on 7 carried. Keil had 7 carries for 30. Cody Costanzo, who had a great game last week against Montpelier had 24 yards on 6 carries, and Combs added 12 on 2 carries.
For the Indians, Colin Hughes led all rushers with 168 yards on 25 carries and 3 rushing TDs. He also intercepted Keil for a TD.
With the loss, Bryan moves to 3-3 on the season, and 2-2 in the league. The road doesn’t get any easier for the Bears, who play host to Patrick Henry for Homecoming next weekend, and then travel to Liberty Center.
